Diapers, clothing and supplies · NYC
Little Essentials supports NYC families in poverty with children ages 0–5 through community partners. Its free family workshops are a separate offering.
Do next: ask your shelter, caseworker or family-service agency about a referral through Little Essentials, or contact the organization for the current route. Do not assume its warehouse is a public walk-in distribution site. Ask about available sizes, items and pickup arrangements.
Diapers anywhere in the US · find a local distribution partner
Use the National Diaper Bank Network’s guidance and member directory, or ask local 211 about diapers and basic needs. Banks may distribute through partner agencies rather than directly to families.
Do next: confirm referral requirements, distribution hours, diaper sizes and stock before traveling. Availability varies.
Food and nutrition · WIC and local food help
WIC supports eligible pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding participants, infants and children under 5 with nutrition services and specified foods. The local agency checks eligibility and explains what is covered.
Do next: use USAGov’s food-help page to find the WIC application route for your state. For immediate groceries, use Feeding America’s ZIP-code directory and ask the listed food bank about nearby distributions.
NYC 3-K and Pre-K · early education
Explore 3-K for children turning 3 and Pre-K for children turning 4 in the calendar year they enter. Use the official page for the current birth-year rules and admissions process.
School-day seats are free. Extended-day or year-round seats have separate eligibility and cost rules. An application is not a guarantee of your preferred location or schedule.
Do next: compare programs and hours, apply through the official instructions, and contact enrollment support if the normal application period has passed.
Head Start / Early Head Start · national early-learning pathways
Early Head Start supports infants and toddlers; Head Start serves preschool-age children. Programs provide learning and family support for eligible households. The local program confirms eligibility and available services.
Do next: find a local program through the federal guide, ask about openings and hours, and follow its document checklist. Eligibility does not guarantee an immediate seat.
New parents and developmental support
NYC’s New Family Home Visits initiative connects families with home-visiting support. Ask which participating program fits your pregnancy or child’s age and needs.
For developmental concerns, seek the appropriate early-intervention or school evaluation route. Ask the administering agency about eligibility and any costs; rules differ by service and state.
Free stories, songs and learning
Check your library’s baby and toddler calendar. Ask about caregiver participation, language and registration. Borrow books and build a reading routine without buying a collection.
Need help organizing the next step?
Tell us your ZIP code, child’s age range and the help you need. Providers determine eligibility, openings and benefits. Keep sensitive family documents out of general intake.
