Talk through my next steps ↗What Chhaya provides
Chhaya offers first-time homebuyer education and confidential counseling. Its workshops address the buying process, affordable loan products, insurance and assistance resources. Counseling helps assess your situation and available pathways.
Chhaya is a counseling resource—not the mortgage lender or a guarantee that you receive a grant or a house. Ask which programs fit your household and what further approvals they require.
How to start and what the certificate means
Use Chhaya’s official workshop registration and confirm the current schedule, language options, attendance and counseling requirements. Its workshop page says both days must be attended before counseling and certification.
Ask what the certificate covers, its validity period, which program accepts it and whether further counseling or documentation is needed. Course completion is separate from assistance eligibility, lender preapproval and property approval.
HomeFirst and the next handoff
HPD lists Chhaya among its approved HomeFirst counseling agencies. If HomeFirst fits, have the counselor explain the required education, income and property review, buyer contribution, participating lender and conditional assistance terms. The certificate alone does not reserve funding or approve the mortgage.
Get your paperwork organized
Request the counselor’s exact document checklist rather than assuming every household needs identical records. Keep your workshop record, counseling action plan, income and savings documentation, lender correspondence and assistance requests organized by date.
Track the next action, who is responsible and the deadline. Ask before paying for services or enrolling in a course whether it satisfies your chosen program. Share sensitive records only through an appropriate channel agreed with the receiving provider.
