Alison: learn a skill without paying for a course.
Explore online courses in technology, business, languages and other subjects. Pick a skill that supports your next step, then check the course level and time commitment.
What is free—and what costs money?
Enrolling, studying and completing Alison courses is free. After completion, you can download a free Learner Record as proof of your achievement. Digital or printed certificates and diplomas are optional paid purchases; check the price before buying. Premium features may also cost extra.
Choose a course that fits your goal
Read the syllabus, assessment requirements and publisher information first. Try a practical topic such as computer basics, Excel, customer service or English. If you need a credential for work, school or a license, ask the employer or receiving institution whether it accepts this particular course before paying. Completion does not guarantee employment or professional licensing, and an Alison diploma is not automatically a college degree.
Affiliate disclosure: Daisy may earn a commission on qualifying purchases made by new learners referred through this link. You can learn for free without buying a certificate. Using the link or making a purchase is optional and does not affect access to Dmoonz help.

Free learning. A plan you can actually use.
For homework, family learning or a homeschool day, choose one skill and one hands-on activity. These resources can support your plan without buying a subscription.
Khan Academy · beyond the kids app
Why it matters to Daisy: Khan Academy helped her prepare for and earn her TASC high school equivalency credential. Learning support can change what comes next.
Try it for: math practice, science, grammar, history and other subjects. Choose the learner’s course or skill level rather than guessing by age alone.
Do next: pick one goal, watch or read a lesson, try the practice and return to the skills that need work. Khan Academy Kids is a separate free option for ages 2–8. Neither resource awards a school diploma or replaces official testing.
NASA · turn curiosity into a science activity
NASA JPL’s Learning Space at Home offers educational activities and video tutorials for different grade levels. Pick an activity that fits your child’s reading and math skills.
Do next: read the materials list first, choose something you can make with supplies already at home and supervise tools or experiments. Access to the learning resource is free; supplies or internet access can still cost money.
Smithsonian · art, science and discovery
Explore Smithsonian’s free STEAM games and simulations, plus its children’s activity collections. STEAM connects science, technology, engineering, art and math.
Do next: choose one topic, explore the activity together and have your child draw, write or explain what they noticed. Check age guidance and any supply or device needs.
Library tutoring · free help with a library card
NYPL offers free online homework support through Brainfuse using an NYPL library card. Follow the library’s access instructions and check current tutoring hours and subjects.
Do next: have the assignment and your question ready, then sign in through the library’s official link. Outside NYC, ask your own library whether it offers tutoring or other learning databases; access varies.
A free hands-on learning day · our suggested routine
- Read: borrow a book, read together and talk about a favorite part.
- Practice: choose a short Khan math or reading activity at the learner’s level.
- Explore: try one NASA or Smithsonian activity using available supplies.
- Create: draw a picture, write a short story or make music with household objects.
- Move: take a walk and notice shapes, plants, sounds or changes in the weather.
Adjust the length and difficulty for your child. This is a flexible activity idea, not a complete curriculum or a required school schedule.
Homeschooling in NYC · keep the official steps in view
Free activities help with learning, but formal homeschooling has separate requirements. NYC Public Schools publishes instructions for notices, instruction plans, reports and other applicable steps.
Do next: review the official guidance for your child’s age and grade before changing enrollment. Outside NYC, use your state education department’s homeschool rules. Educational activities do not themselves satisfy every reporting requirement.
IDNYC: make your city easier to explore.
A city ID can help with identification, library access and participating discounts. Check each benefit’s terms before planning a visit.
Who can apply—and why get it?
NYC residents ages 10 and older can apply regardless of immigration status. IDNYC is a municipal photo ID; it is not a driver’s license, REAL ID or proof of work authorization.
Benefits include library access and offers from participating cultural, education, entertainment and fitness providers. An ID helps identify you; it does not automatically approve benefits or housing.
Museum memberships · redeem the benefit before you go
Eligible cardholders can receive free one-year memberships or discounted tickets at participating institutions. Each institution has its own guest, age and redemption terms.
The city’s cultural-benefits page states that a free or paid membership within the previous five years can affect eligibility for a free IDNYC membership. Do not assume every family member or special exhibit is included.
Do next: select the institution, read its terms, redeem or activate the benefit as instructed and confirm any required reservation.
How to apply · documents, enrollment and your next step
- Use the official Document Calculator to identify acceptable proof of identity and NYC residence.
- Check the current enrollment locations and appointment or designated walk-in instructions. Call 311 for help.
- Check caretaker requirements for a child’s application and bring the required documents.
- Complete enrollment and the photo process in person. Follow the provider’s instructions for receiving your card.
Use the official application guidance for current fees, document exceptions and language support. Keep identity documents out of Dmoonz’s general intake.
Local discoveries

Harmony Program · NYC instrumental learning

Why explore it: participating students receive instrumental instruction, supplies and instruments free through its program.
Check first: openings, location, grades, instruments and audition requirements. This is not a guaranteed private piano lesson.

Learn. Serve. Build a path forward.
These are application-based education, service or employment opportunities. Start dates and acceptance vary; use emergency shelter resources if you need a safe place tonight.
Job Corps · generally ages 16–24
Free career training and education for eligible, generally low-income young people. Residential participants can receive housing, meals, basic care and a living allowance; nonresidential options also exist.
Next: contact admissions to check age, income, status and background requirements, current center operations, trade availability and start dates. Ask about disability accommodations and parent/guardian requirements. Confirm dorm rules and any dependent-care arrangements; do not assume family housing is provided.
AmeriCorps NCCC · team service, generally ages 18–24
A full-time, approximately 10-month national-service program with housing, travel, a modest living allowance and an education award after successful completion. It is service, not a regular salaried job. Team leader requirements differ.
Next: confirm current age/status eligibility, application windows, deployment expectations, meals, health coverage, accessibility and family-care needs directly. Acceptance and placement are not guaranteed.
AmeriCorps VISTA · ages 18+, no upper age limit
Community-service roles provide a modest living allowance and qualifying end-of-service benefits. Housing is not automatically provided; any host-site support varies. Eligible participants may qualify for childcare assistance.
Next: review each official listing’s duties, location, term, eligibility and allowance. Calculate local living costs before accepting and ask specifically about housing, healthcare and dependent support.
Registered apprenticeships · paid work while learning
Combine paid employment, mentoring and job-related instruction with an industry credential. Age, education and other entry requirements depend on the employer and occupation. Housing is not ordinarily included unless the listing says so.
Next: search the official finder, verify the sponsor and apply directly. Ask about wages, hours, fees, tools, transport, training and progression before accepting.
Need local training instead of relocating?
Use an American Job Center to ask about job search, eligible training funding and youth services. Availability and funding decisions vary. Ask about transportation or childcare support rather than assuming those costs are covered.
