Dmoonz / Across the United States
50 states.
A place to start.
Find your state’s official benefits contact and local routes for shelter, meals, showers and education. Start with your location and what you need today.
Choose your state ↗I need help nowImmediate danger or urgent medical emergency: 911. For local non-emergency resources, use 211’s location finder. A Dmoonz appointment is not required to use these resources.
These are state contacts and referral routes—not live bed listings, safety certifications or a complete list of every program. Providers confirm eligibility, services and availability.
Choose your state. Then find your local provider.
Your state agency is a starting point for benefit information. Shelter entry is often handled locally; use your ZIP code, city or county in the local finders. A state office is not automatically a shelter intake location.

Need somewhere tonight—or a shower today?
Open HUD’s Find Shelter tool, choose a service category and enter your location. Contact the provider to ask whether it handles intake, has current capacity or can direct you to coordinated entry—the local assessment and referral process.
Search shelter and service locations ↗ · Get local referrals ↗
Showers, laundry and hygiene
Ask local 211 or a shelter outreach worker for a staffed day center, hygiene program, shower service or laundry assistance. Confirm service hours, towels, toiletries, accessibility, fees and referral rules.
A listing for shelter does not prove showers are available, and a day center may not have overnight beds. Ask for the exact service you need.
Domestic violence or an unsafe household
Use the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or its official support site for safety planning and referrals. Use a device that is safe for you when possible. Confidential shelter addresses should not be publicly shared.
Contact the national hotline ↗Meals and groceries near your ZIP code.
Enter your ZIP code at Feeding America ↗
Select the food bank serving your area and ask about partner pantries, soup kitchens or meal distributions. A warehouse may not distribute directly to visitors. Confirm the meal or pickup time, required documents, service area and dietary needs.
For benefit applications, ask the state contact about food-assistance programs and the correct application office. An application is different from a meal available today.
The right route depends on your household.
Children, babies and families
Tell intake the ages of every child and whether anyone is pregnant. Ask whether the family can stay together, how to access diapers and food, and where to seek child-care or school support.
Use the national family guide for Head Start, baby essentials and learning. Ask your school district for its homeless-education liaison to discuss enrollment and school continuity.
Explore family essentials ↗Youth on their own
Contact 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) for youth support and local referrals. Ask providers about age limits, intake and whether they offer overnight shelter. Do not assume an adult hostel can accept an unaccompanied minor.
Contact youth support ↗Adults, older people and disability-related needs
Tell the local intake provider about household composition, mobility, communication, medication storage, equipment or caregiver needs. Ask about accommodations and appropriate placement rather than assume a standard room supplies medical or personal care.
For age-specific benefit contacts, use your state agency. If leaving a hospital, ask the discharge team to coordinate a suitable referral.
Veterans
Call 877-424-3838 for the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans and ask about local VA services and housing pathways.
Explore VA homeless services ↗Publicly funded education: ask before paying.
Free learning, training approval and financial aid are different things. Your local office determines eligibility and whether funding is available for the course you choose.
American Job Centers and WIOA
American Job Centers offer free job-search help. Ask about WIOA-funded training, approved providers and any help with books, testing, transport or other barriers. An approved-provider listing does not itself approve your funding.
Get written funding approval before enrolling or paying if you are relying on the program to cover costs.
Find an American Job Center ↗Explore approved training ↗Job Corps, eligible young people ages 16–24
Job Corps offers federally funded education and career training at no cost to eligible students. Ask admissions about age exceptions, other eligibility rules, campus openings, residential support and timing. It is not an emergency overnight shelter.
Explore Job Corps ↗Adult education, disability employment and college aid
Ask your state or local education provider about publicly funded literacy, English and high-school-equivalency preparation. For a disability-related barrier to work, ask the state vocational rehabilitation agency about assessment and an approved employment plan.
For college, ask the school’s financial-aid office about FAFSA, grants, residency requirements and homeless-student support. Do not assume every college cost is covered.
Understand education and aid pathways ↗Paid apprenticeships and learning today
Registered apprenticeships combine paid employment and instruction; apply to the employer or sponsor and confirm pay, entry requirements and costs. These are not the same as a government grant for any course.
Find apprenticeship routes ↗While applications are pending, explore free Khan Academy, NASA, Smithsonian and library resources.
Start free learning today ↗A cheap room is only useful if it fits your needs.
YMCA lodging varies by branch; many YMCAs do not rent rooms. No paid lodging provider or nightly rate has been verified for every state in this guide.
Ask local 211 or a caseworker for established transitional housing and paid temporary-stay options. Verify the actual operator through its official site. Request the total price, taxes, deposits, ID and age rules, accessibility, family occupancy and cancellation terms.
If you have no money and need shelter tonight, use emergency intake instead of a paid booking route. Never trade sexual contact, control of documents or coerced work for a bed.
Use this when you call.
“I’m in ZIP code __, in __ County. Our household is __ adults and __ children, ages __. We need __ today. Where is intake, is it open, what does it cost, and what should we bring?”
- Confirm the provider using an independently listed official contact.
- Ask about supervision, privacy, accessibility, locks, complaints and household rules.
- Keep identity and account documents under your control; use providers’ proper secure processes.
- Track the person you spoke with, the address, instructions and next follow-up.
- Do not pay someone to “unlock” a guaranteed government benefit.
A directory listing does not certify safety. Use 911 for immediate danger, and ask a supervisor or advocate for help with other concerns.
Need help organizing what comes next?
Use emergency services directly for urgent needs. Dmoonz can help you organize the referrals and next steps you receive; we cannot reserve shelter beds or guarantee placement.
